Frequently Asked Questions About Clear Aligners at PB Braces
Honest answers about clear aligners — Invisalign vs. Spark, cost, treatment time, daily wear, and more — from orthodontist Dr. Richard Donatelli at PB Braces.

General Questions About Clear Aligners
Clear aligners are a major decision, and good information makes it easier. Below are the questions our team at PB Braces hears most often from adults and parents across West Palm Beach, Royal Palm Beach, Lantana, and Palm Beach Gardens. Every answer is written in plain language by orthodontist Dr. Richard Donatelli, drawing on years of clinical experience with both Invisalign and Spark.
What are clear aligners?
Clear aligners are removable, custom-made plastic trays that gradually move your teeth into a healthier, straighter position. You'll wear a series of trays over the course of treatment, switching to a new one every 1–2 weeks. Each tray applies precise, gentle pressure to specific teeth based on Dr. Donatelli's digital plan.
Are clear aligners as effective as traditional braces?
For most cases, yes — modern aligners are highly effective and predictable when planned by an experienced orthodontist. For complex bite issues, severe rotations, or cases requiring significant tooth extrusion, traditional braces may still deliver better outcomes. Dr. Donatelli will give you an honest assessment at your free consultation.
What's the difference between Invisalign and Spark?
Invisalign has the longest track record and broadest treatment range. Spark uses a newer material that resists staining better and features smoother edges that may be more comfortable. Dr. Donatelli will compare both options based on your specific case at your consultation.
Am I a candidate for clear aligners?
Most teens and adults with healthy gums and teeth are candidates. Aligners work for crowding, spacing, mild to moderate bite issues, and many complex cases. The only way to know for sure is a free 3D scan and consultation with Dr. Donatelli at any PB Braces office.

How Daily Life Works With Clear Aligners
How long do I have to wear aligners each day?
You'll wear your aligners 20–22 hours per day, removing them only for meals, drinks (other than water), and brushing. Less than 20 hours per day will slow your treatment significantly and may compromise results. Discipline is the single biggest factor in aligner success.
How long does aligner treatment take?
Most cases finish in 9 to 18 months, depending on complexity. Simple alignment may take as little as 6 months. Complex bite or rotation work can take longer. Dr. Donatelli gives a precise timeline at your free consultation.
Do aligners hurt?
Most patients feel mild pressure and tenderness for the first 1–2 days after switching to a new tray. Over-the-counter pain relievers handle the discomfort easily. There are no sharp brackets or poking wires — just gentle, predictable movement.
Can I eat and drink with aligners in?
Only plain water. Eating with aligners in can crack them, and sugary or acidic drinks (coffee, juice, soda, wine) trapped against teeth under aligners cause rapid tooth decay. Take aligners out for everything except water, then brush before putting them back in.
What if I lose an aligner?
Call any PB Braces office and we'll work with the manufacturer to get a replacement. In the meantime, Dr. Donatelli will tell you whether to wear your previous tray or skip ahead. Invisalign Teen patients receive complimentary replacement trays.
Will I need attachments on my teeth?
Most cases require small tooth-colored bumps called attachments to help aligners grip and move teeth predictably. They're nearly invisible, painless, and removed when treatment ends.

Cost, Insurance & Choosing the Right Provider
How much do clear aligners cost at PB Braces?
Most adult aligner cases fall between $3,500 and $8,000, depending on complexity and length. Limited-treatment cases for minor concerns can be lower. We provide a written, all-inclusive cost estimate at your free consultation — covering all aligners, attachments, refinements, and final retainers.
Does insurance cover clear aligners?
Most PPO dental insurance plans cover Invisalign or Spark the same way they cover braces — typically a lifetime orthodontic benefit of $1,500–$3,000 per person. Our team verifies your benefits before your first visit and applies them directly to your treatment cost.
Which insurance plans does PB Braces accept?
We accept most major PPO dental insurance plans, including Aetna, Cigna, Delta Dental, Guardian, MetLife, United Healthcare, Humana, and many others. Don't see yours? Call any of our four offices — chances are we work with your plan.
Are mail-order aligners safe?
Mail-order aligner companies skip the in-person exam, X-rays, and ongoing supervision that catch problems before they become serious. Class-action lawsuits, FDA warnings, and a flood of remediation cases have made the answer clear: aligners should be planned and supervised by an orthodontist. The savings are not worth the risk to your bite, gums, or roots.
Why see an orthodontist instead of a general dentist?
An orthodontist completes 2–3 additional years of full-time post-doctoral training dedicated entirely to tooth and jaw movement. Dr. Richard Donatelli treats only orthodontic cases — which means deeper expertise, faster diagnosis, and more predictable outcomes than a part-time provider. For complex cases, this experience matters.
What happens after my aligners come off?
Just like braces, aligner treatment is followed by retention. We provide custom retainers (clear or fixed) and a clear retention schedule. Skipping retainers is the single most common reason adults return for retreatment — don't skip retention.
