Post: Phase 1 Orthodontics – Does Your 7-Year-Old Need Early Braces?
Early orthodontic treatment, or Phase 1, is designed for children aged 7–10 to address developing dental issues while their jaws are still growing. This proactive approach can guide proper jaw development, create space for permanent teeth, and reduce the need for more invasive treatments later on. At Palm Beach Braces and Pediatrics, Dr. Aditi Patel, BDS, DDS offer personalized care to ensure your child’s smile develops healthily and confidently. For more information, contact us or book an appointment online. We have convenient locations to serve you in Royal Palm Beach, FL, West Palm Beach, FL, and Lantana, FL.

Many parents are surprised to learn that orthodontic treatment can (and often should) begin earlier than the teen years. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends an evaluation by age 7 – and here at PB Braces, we agree.
So what exactly is Phase 1 Orthodontics and does your child need it?
What Is Phase 1 Orthodontic Treatment?
Phase 1, or interceptive treatment, is early orthodontic care done while a child still has a mix of baby and adult teeth. The goal is to guide jaw growth, create space, and reduce the need for more invasive treatment later.
It typically occurs between ages 7–10 and lasts around 9–12 months.
Signs Your Child May Need Early Braces
Your child might benefit from a Phase 1 evaluation if they:
• Lost baby teeth early or late
• Have crowded or crooked teeth
• Breathe through their mouth
• Have difficulty chewing or biting
• Suck their thumb past age 5
• Have a visible overbite, underbite, or crossbite
If you’ve noticed any of these signs, it’s time to schedule a visit with one of our pediatric orthodontists.
What Happens During Early Treatment?
Depending on the needs of your child, treatment may involve:
• A palatal expander (to widen the jaw)
• Partial braces
• A habit-breaking appliance
• Space maintainers
The goal is to set your child up for easier, shorter treatment during Phase 2 (typically in their early teens).
Is It Worth Starting So Young?
Absolutely. Phase 1 treatment can:
• Reduce the risk of impacted teeth
• Improve facial symmetry
• Avoid the need for tooth extractions or jaw surgery later
• Build your child’s confidence early
At PB Braces, we make it fun, comfortable, and affordable for kids to get the care they need. We also work closely with our pediatric dentists for a seamless experience.
